Emergency needs of patients is becoming more complex and demanding on Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT). Emergencies, such as car crashes, natural disasters, and acts of violence, as well as the needs of the elderly, will continue to create demands for EMT’s and paramedics. The EMT provides basic life support, including: patient assessment; airway management; use of the automatic defibrillator, and; assisting patients with taking some of their own medication. Additionally, the EMT must understand all applicable legal, moral and ethical issues surrounding emergency medical service. An EMS Professions Diploma will give the technician a much broader and comprehensive knowledge and skills, which will greatly improve the kind of life support that he/she can give a patient. Very often, a patient’s life or death can become a function of the EMT’s knowledge and skills.
The primary focus of the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician is to provide basic and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance. The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician is a link from the scene to the emergency health care system.
